With this cool temperature and gloomy weather, do you also find difficulty in getting up in the morning even though your alarm clock snoozed for the nth time?
Ladies and gentlemen, I will share you how I motivate myself every morning and I hope you will get some good points.
I will step back to 13 years ago when I was in my first year in BS Accountancy course. As I mentioned in my earlier speech, it took me 2 hours to go to our school and it means I had to wake up at 4:00 am every single weekday to be on time for our 7:30 am class. I asked my Facebook friends what are the things that de-motivate them in finishing their studies. Some of the answers I got are:
• the course they took is their parent's preference for them but they don't really like it
• financial difficulty (expensive tuition fees, daily allowance, school fees, etc.)
• too far from their houses
During my first few weeks in College, I thought of quitting for the reason that I had to get up too early each morning and that I was not enjoying my course. I love numbers but Accountancy is not just about numbers. It involves understanding how Debit and Credit work which I didn't appreciate as early as when my Accounting professor, Mrs. Cruz, was teaching this. After failing some short and long quizzes, I didn't visualize myself in becoming a CPA - Certified Public Accountant.
Then, there was a seminar held for 1st year College Accounting Students. Our speaker, Chairman of Accountancy department, Ms. Santos, shared her journey when she was studying. The most valuable thing I learned from her speech was the true meaning of CPA.
C - which stands for COURAGE. The quality of mind or spirit that enables Accounting students to face difficulty.
P - stands for PATIENCE. Being patient to read thick Accounting books and complete lots of Accounting exercises. And, lastly
A - for ALMIGHTY. After Accounting students do their part, He will do the rest.
Now when it comes to work, I also asked my friends and I got these de-motivating factors:
• their good performance is not recognized
• they think they are underpaid
• and worst is they don't like their jobs
I found a research study at Harvard Business School website and there's an article by David Sirota, Louis A. Mischkind, and Michael Irwin Meltzer, authors of The Enthusiastic the Employee: How Companies Profit by Giving Workers What They Want.
It's interesting they said this in the article - "Most companies have it all wrong. They don't have to motivate their employees. They have to stop de-motivating them."
According to them there are three key goals of people at work. To maintain the enthusiasm employees bring to their jobs initially, management must understand the three sets of goals that the great majority of workers seek from their work-and then satisfy those goals:
• Equity: To be respected and to be treated fairly in areas such as pay, benefits, and job security.
• Achievement: To be proud of one's job, accomplishments, and employer.
• Camaraderie: To have good, productive relationships with fellow employees.
As for me, I have developed my own motivation before reading that article. Of course, the most important reason why I work is my family. And, EQUITY is always there. But, I have found 3Cs that motivate me every time I feel I still I want to sleep more and attempt to snooze my alarm clock again:
COMPANY
COLLEAGUES (which means 360 degrees - managers, peers, etc)
CLIENTS
I am faithfully committed to these 3Cs.
Being grateful everyday on how the company had helped me be at a place where I am now is a motivation alone to go to the office. I almost lost a job in 2008 but my company offered me a job in USA, then they gave me an opportunity in Asia that now I'm closer to my family.
I will see my supportive colleagues, Ms. F and other colleagues, that love helping one another in order to complete our daily tasks.
And, I will have the opportunity to deliver the best service to our clients, to Mrs. M and others, that we value most. It could be providing reports they need or by resolving issues.
Thank goodness, with courage, lots of patience and with the help of Almighty, I got my CPA license. And, with my company, colleagues and our clients, I'm proud to say I'm a happy, enthusiastic and optimistic worker.
